The Village of Foremost is small community with big city appeal, located 110 km east of Lethbridge on the Red Coat Trail (Highway 61) and 102 km southwest of Medicine Hat. Established in 1913 as an agricultural service centre and incorporated as a village in 1950, today, Foremost has a population of over 500 and serves a trading area of over 2,000 people. A host of recreational facilities, a diversity of cultural activities, an award winning school and a broad range of businesses provide residents with a high quality of life. The community’s economic base is farming, with many generations of families continuing to operate successful farming operations.

The Foremost & District Chamber of Commerce invites you to discover Foremost. Our peaceful village of 500+ is located on the junction of highways 879 and 61 in South East Alberta. Foremost is in close proximity to such major parks as Writing-On-Stone, Forty Mile Park, Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park and Red Rock Coulee Natural Area.

Reminder - Sewer System

Due to past sewer problems, please do not dispose of egg shells, cooking grease, cooking oil, feminine hygiene products, condoms or baby wipes through the sewer system. As well, it has been found that over use of liquid fabric softeners and powder laundry detergents cause a build up in sewer lines, so please keep that in mind when using these items.

The Village of Foremost appreciates your cooperation with this issue in helping to keep our sewer lines clear.

South Forty Waste Services Landfill Site

Hours of Operation (Foremost Site)

Wednesdays - 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Fridays - 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

Saturdays - 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Garbage Collection

Please ensure that garbage is out for pick up on garbage days by 8:00 am. The schedule can often change due to emergent situations and therefore a strict schedule cannot always be followed.

Friday is regular garbage pick up day with an extra run made on Tuesdays for businesses. Please remember to bag grass clipping and garden refuse and cut branches into four-foot lengths for easier pick-up. All garbage must be properly bagged and not loose in the bins.

Also please keep bags to a 50 pound maximum.

Burning barrels will not be dumped into the Garbage Truck

Recycling: Village council would like to thank those individuals who have taken care in disposing of their recyclable materials in the proper manner.

Cardboard: Business cardboard will continue to be picked up on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please ensure that your cardboard boxes are broken down, flattened and separated from garbage and in an enclosed box to keep dry. Please flatten all cardboard that is put into the trailer, and no cardboard to be put in the garbage truck.

Mulching: Mulching is becoming increasingly popular, do to its convenience and health benefits it provides to the lawn. A mulch blade mower chops the clippings down to a fine mulch which is returned to the lawn. as the tiny grass clippings decompose rapidly, the lawn has a cleaner appearance. Nitrogen and other essential nutrients are fed back into the grass roots, resulting in a thicker and greener lawn without fertilizing or feeding.

For best results when mulching, the rule of thumb is not to cut off more than one-third of the grass length. For optimum results, do not cut below 30-40 mm and cutting frequently is recommended. mulching is also beneficial  to help maintain soil balance and moisture, thus less water is required for healthy grass.

The Village of Foremost requests the public to consider mulching their grass rather than bagging for transfer to the refuse site. This would save on garbage volumes in both hauling and land fill space and also promote a healthy and happy yard.

Composting: The Village of Foremost has set aside an area for the composting of leaves and grass. It is located at the Industrial Park, north of the County shop, adjacent to the large dirt piles.

Please follow this system when utilizing the composting area:

  • Only leaves and grass clippings
  • Plastic bags are to be dumped and if discarded, put in barrel next to composting area
  • No garbage, household or otherwise
  • No shrub, trees trimmings or branches
  • No metal
  • Biodegradable bags are permissible.

Your cooperation in maintaining this composting site is appreciated.

Thank you to all who have purchased their 2016 Dog Tag, for those who still need to purchase them, listed below are the yearly license fee required by the Village of Foremost, due January 1, of each year.

1. License for each altered dog       $10.00
2. License for each unaltered dog  $ 15.00

Dog Control;

The Village of Foremost would like to thank those dog owners who continue to keep their dogs from running at large within the Village of Foremost.

However we still continue too receive complaints regarding dogs that are running loose within the Village or causing a disturbance by excessive barking.

Dogs running at large are a nuisance to other residents. They tear up garbage, damage and destroy property, and at times frighten children and adults.

Please continue to keep our Village clean and a pleasant place to live by making sure your dog is kept within the confines of your yard, unless it is otherwise restrained by a permitted leash held by a person and that leash is attached to a choke chain, collar or harness securely holding the dog.

The Village of Foremost would appreciate your assistance in adhering to By-Law No. 473, a copy of which may be viewed at the Village Office during regular business hours.

Irrigation System.

Due to the early freeze in October 2016, prior to the Irrigation system blow-out, please check all valves and standpipes for cracks and or breaks.

If you have any cracks or breaks in your private lines, please repair prior to irrigation start-up in the Spring of 2017.. Estimated date for Irrigation start up will be approximately April 17, 2017, weather permitting.

The Commission would like to encourage everyone to recycle glass, plastics, metal cans and paper by using the recycle containers in Foremost or nearby centres. We would request that all individuals:

  • Report to the Waste Transfer Site Operator before disposing garbage.
  • Arrive earlier to allow sufficient time to unload before closing time.

Freon removal service is available at Tirecraft in Foremost. Freon removal certification (sticker) is required before acceptance at the designated sites.
